Burdekin Junior Eisteddfod, Ayr - 19-29 May 2012
From humble beginnings in 1983 as a two-day music and drama event, the eisteddfod is now a two-week-long cultural spectacular drawing nearly 2000 entries from the Burdekin, Bowen, Proserpine, Airlie Beach, Mackay, Charters Towers, Townsville, Ingham, Innisfail, Cairns and Mareeba. With sections for everything from music and dance to visual arts and drama, the eisteddfod is a great showcase of the north's junior talent. It is held at the Burdekin Theatre. Golden Gumboot Festival, Tully - 19 May 2012
To promote Tully's reputation for being a "Pretty Wet Place" this family-oriented festival has as many things to do involving gumboots as you can imagine! Relay For Life, Bowen/Collinsville - 19-20 May 2012
A fundraising program of Cancer Council Queensland, with teams of 10 to 15 people walking or running around a track for 18 hours to help make a difference in the lives of Queenslanders affected by cancer. A moving aspect of the event is the Candlelight Ceremony in the evening, when the inside of the track is illuminated with thousands of candle tributes, each lit in honour and support of someone fighting cancer or in memory of loved ones. Babinda Harvest Festival, Babinda - 26 May - 2 June 2012
A week of community events in its 49th year, starting with the Harvest Cabaret where the harvest princesses are formally introduced - a sell-out night with live band. The following Saturday is family day. The Grand Parade in the afternoon runs through the decorated main street against a backdrop of themed shops and staff. Over 25 floats took part in 2011. Join in with all the fun of a country fair at the Babinda showgrounds including lively stage performances from 4-8pm, free kids` events, pony rides, helicopter lolly drop, displays, competitions, amusements & rides, followed by one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in the north. Mabo Day March & Celebrations, Torres Shire - 3 June 2012
There is a bank holiday for Torres Shire on Monday the 4th of June. Local celebrations commemorate the day in 1992 that the famous Torres Strait Islander Eddie Mabo achieved recognition of Native Title to indigenous land owners throughout Australia, from a high court judgement following his ten year campaign. Festival of the Knob
A day celebrating the colourful life of early settler George 'Yorkey' Lawson, the Yorkshireman, after whom Yorkeys Knob was named. Join the residents for a day full of fun for all ages, with live music and entertainers, jump castles, clowns and giant slides for the little ones and 80 market stalls selling everything from gourmet food to bric-a-brac. Local historical display, police, vintage cars/motor cycles etc. Highlights include the arrival of 'Yorkey' with gifts for the children. And who knows, you may even end up being crowned King or Queen of the Knob by the Mayor of Cairns. Now backing onto the Cairns Challenge, this event has become a huge celebration for the Knob!
